Chile: From the Colorful Streets of Valparaíso to the Rapids of Maipo
January 15, 2025
Our journey through Chile was an unforgettable blend of culture, history, fine wine, and high-adrenaline adventure. Few countries offer such diversity in experience, and in just a few days, we explored its coastal cities, tasted world-class wine in the Casablanca Valley, and rode the roaring waters of the Maipo River in the Andes foothills. Here’s a look at our unforgettable trip through the heart of central Chile.

A City Like No Other: Valparaíso
Our adventure began in the city of Valparaíso. Perched on the Pacific coast and built into steep hills, Valparaíso is a riot of color and creativity. Every turn reveals a new mural, a splash of street art, or a brightly painted staircase.
Often called “La Joya del Pacífico” (The Jewel of the Pacific), this port city has long been a magnet for poets, and painters. Even Chile’s most famous literary figure, Pablo Neruda, called it home. We wandered its winding alleyways, rode the old funiculars that climb the hills, and soaked in the panoramic views of the sea from Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción.
Valparaíso is not just a city; it’s a living, breathing canvas.

The Soul of French Winemaking in Chile: Villard Fine Wines
A short drive inland took us to Casablanca Valley, one of Chile’s premier wine regions. The cool, coastal climate makes it ideal for growing white grape varietals, especially Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
We visited Villard Fine Wines, a boutique, family-run winery founded in 1989 by Thierry Villard, a French expatriate who brought winemaking tradition to the Chilean terroir. Villard was one of the first premium family wineries in the valley, and it helped shape Casablanca into an internationally recognized wine region.
The estate is breathtaking—rows of vines rolling into the hills, with a rustic French-Chilean charm to the architecture. We toured the cellars, learned about their sustainable farming practices, and tasted some of the best wines we’ve ever had. Their Grand Vin Chardonnay and Expresion Syrah were standouts—complex, smooth, and full of personality.
This was more than a tasting; it was an immersion into the passion and heritage behind every bottle.

Into the Andes: Whitewater Rafting on the Maipo River
Ready for some adrenaline, we headed east toward San José de Maipo, a mountain town nestled in the Cajón del Maipo, an incredible canyon region in the Andes just outside Santiago. This area is beloved by locals and tourists alike for its raw natural beauty—towering peaks, glacier-fed rivers, and thermal springs.
We joined the team at Santiago Rafting, a trusted outfitter known for their experienced guides and safety-first approach. Our target: the Maipo River, a wild and scenic waterway originating in the high Andes. The river offers thrilling Class III and IV rapids, ideal for those seeking an exciting, yet manageable challenge.
Decked out in wetsuits and helmets, we jumped into our rafts and set off. The water was ice-cold and fast-moving. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and rugged cliffs, we paddled through turbulent waves, sudden drops, and thrilling turns. At times, we paused to float and simply take in the magnificent scenery around us.
The contrast from our serene day at the vineyard couldn’t have been more dramatic—but that’s what made it all so amazing.
