This Colombia Caribbean travel guide is packed with adventure, culture, and tropical magic. During our Big Guy Big World journey along Colombia’s northern coast, we floated in volcanic mud, sailed the Caribbean Sea, and explored Cartagena’s rich history. Every moment reminded us why Colombia belongs on every traveler’s bucket list.

Luxury in Cartagena: Art, Elegance, and Celebrity Style
Our adventure began at the legendary Sofitel Legend Santa Clara Cartagena, where we stayed in the penthouse suite designed by the famous Colombian artist Fernando Botero. This suite is more than luxury-it’s a piece of living art. Even Shakira chooses it when she’s in town.
Totumo Mud Volcano: The Surprise Spa
One of the most unique experiences in this Colombia Caribbean travel guide is visiting the Totumo Mud Volcano (El Volcán de Lodo El Totumo), located about 45 minutes from Cartagena. Though it may look like a small hill from the outside, the inside holds a warm, mineral-rich mud bath believed to have healing powers.
According to local legend, a priest calmed the volcano’s fire with holy water. Today, visitors float effortlessly in the thick mud-it’s like being weightless. After your soak, local women help rinse you off in a nearby lagoon, making the entire experience both hilarious and heartwarming.

This wasn’t my first visit here, I try to bring people back every chance I get. You can check out some of my past Totumo experiences here:

Sailing the Caribbean: A Must in Any Colombia Caribbean Travel Guide
The Caribbean coast of Colombia is postcard-perfect. Our days were filled with blue skies, turquoise waters, and stunning views as we cruised past small islands and swam in secluded bays.
No Colombia Caribbean travel guide would be complete without time spent on the water. Whether you’re snorkeling, paddle boarding, or simply relaxing on deck, the coastline offers something for every kind of traveler.

Culture and Cuisine Along Colombia’s Caribbean Coast
The coastal region of Colombia is a cultural treasure. Afro-Caribbean rhythms like cumbia and champeta fill the streets. Local vendors offer up fresh mango with lime, crispy fried fish, and other flavors you won’t forget.
We met fishermen at dawn, danced with locals at sunset, and shared meals with families who opened their hearts to us. These authentic connections are what make travel so meaningful.

Why Colombia Belongs on Your Bucket List
From floating in mud volcanoes to sailing the Caribbean, from vibrant food to unforgettable music, Cartagena offers something for every kind of traveler. It’s affordable, diverse, and packed with moments that stay with you long after you leave.
If you’re dreaming up your next international adventure, make room for Colombia. It’s more than just a destination, it’s an experience. And without a doubt, one of my favorite countries in the world.

March 2, 2025
There’s a pulse to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that you feel the moment you arrive. It vibrates through the echo of drums from a nearby samba school, drifts in the scent of grilled cheese from beach carts, and rolls through the hills stretching between forest and sea. Rather than observing from the outside, we were…
