Exploring Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica

If you’ve ever been to Jamaica, chances are you’ve heard of Dunn’s River Falls. It’s located near Ocho Rios and is one of the top places to visit in Jamaica. So of course, when we took a Big Guy Big World trip of contest winners to Jamaica, we had to explore Dunn’s River Falls while we were there.

When we arrived, we got to learn more about Dunn’s River Falls. Our guide told us that the falls receive millions of visitors each year. This year, we were lucky to be some of them!

It was a hell of a hike because you’re literally hiking up a waterfall as the water is coming down, so gravity and nature want you to go the other way. Toward the end of the hike, it looks pretty daunting and there are some pretty high up hikes, but the hardest part is actually the first two levels. The water is running the fastest and there are not as many places for you to gain footing to pull yourself upward. It was hard work but totally worth it. The coolest part was that there were these natural pools that you could stop and swim in along the hike. The average temperature in Jamaica in November is 84 degrees, so it was definitely warm enough to stop and swim to cool down along our hike.

Finishing the hike was such a satisfying feeling. I would like to note that there were many of us who are on the bigger side that were able to complete the hike. It took us a bit longer (about an hour and 20 minutes) compared to the majority of the group that completed the hike in closer to 45 minutes.

It was so beautiful seeing the waterfalls while being surrounded by so much lush greenery. Talk about being fully immersed in nature. It really is a very spiritual experience that I recommend to anyone. Our group had a great time taking photos and swimming.

A Natural Phenomenon

One thing we didn’t know before we visited is that these falls are considered to be a natural phenomenon. Apparently, it continually regenerates itself from deposits of travertine rock, resulting from the precipitation of calcium carbonate from the river, as it passes over the falls.

Dunn’s River Falls Amenities

Dunn’s River Falls had great amenities, which made it easier for a large group like ours traveling together.

Amenities included:

  • Restrooms
  • A gift shop
  • On-site restaurant
  • Accessibility
  • Parking
  • Tours
