Exploring the Luminous Lagoon in Montego Bay
While on our Big Guy Big World trip to Jamaica, we had to explore the Luminous Lagoon. I have to say, it was as magical as it sounds. Located in Montego Bay, the Luminous Lagoon is known for being home to millions of dinoflagellates. When it’s dark out, the lagoon glows and sparkles when the water is disturbed, as a result of these microscopic organisms producing an interesting glow. It creates outlines of fish and other objects in the water.
Our group to three boats out to the Luminous Lagoon. We all got to witness this incredible natural phenomenon. Apparently, it’s considered one of the top four places in the world to experience dinoflagellates.
Luminous Lagoon Tour Information
Exploring the Luminous Lagoon is fairly easy. Tour boats depart every evening from the Glistening Waters Marina. The tour lasts about 45 minutes. The best part is when you get to jump out of the boat and swim, with the dinoflagellates illuminating around you. To be 100% truthful, the water feels a bit dirty. But it is totally fun and totally worth it. When you get back to the shore, you can enjoy a nice dinner at the Glistening Waters Restaurant.
Overall, it was a very memorable experience and we were all so glad we made time to do it. Love to travel? Follow along on our Big Guy Big World adventures.
