There’s nothing like an island retreat to shake off the stress of travel. From colorful characters at a quirky waterfront restaurant to unforgettable encounters with sloths and monkeys.

A Wild Ride to Paradise

When we arrived, we quickly realized we were on an island, not the mainland—a pleasant surprise, though the journey to get there was far from serene. The van ride felt like a rollercoaster, with wild drivers navigating the twists and turns like pros. But once we arrived, the island’s charm took over, and for the first time in days, we had three glorious days to relax and unwind.

A Late-Night Adventure to Captain Jack’s

Hunger hit us hard upon arrival—it was already 10 p.m., and only three restaurants were open. The first spot was closed despite the sign saying otherwise, and after a few calls, we finally landed at Captain Jack’s.

Captain Jack’s was a sight to behold. The whole building leaned precariously over the water, with chipped paint adding to its rugged charm. The owner, an eccentric and spirited man, welcomed us with drinks, insisting we stay. His pregnant wife served us food, while the drinks they offered came in a mysterious bottle filled with roots and floating bits. Captain Jack spun a tale about the bottle’s origins, claiming it was gifted by a man who’d discovered the cure for cancer—a story as intriguing as it was unbelievable.

Despite the peeling paint and quirky atmosphere, the experience at Captain Jack’s was unforgettable. It wasn’t just about the food; it was the people, the stories, and the ambiance that made it one of the highlights of our trip.

A Sanctuary Full of Surprises

The next day, we visited a nearby sanctuary that stole our hearts. Sofie, a friendly sloth, became an instant favorite as she hung lazily in our arms. The sanctuary wasn’t just about sloths, though—it was teeming with life.

We held monkeys, fed a sweet baby deer, and even did a promo with brightly colored birds. Every corner of the sanctuary offered something new to marvel at, from playful animals to serene natural surroundings. It was these unexpected moments—like a monkey playfully tugging at my hair or the gentle nudge of the baby deer—that made the visit so special.

Unwinding on the Island

Our Airbnb split across two parts of the island, offered stunning views and a chance to truly relax. Whether it was enjoying the serene waters, meeting locals with fascinating stories, or marveling at the vibrant wildlife, this island escape gave us exactly what we needed: a mix of adventure, relaxation, and unforgettable memories.
