South Korea: Festivals of Light and Wonder
South Korea is a country that beautifully blends ancient traditions with modern innovation, and nowhere is this more evident than in its breathtaking festivals. Our Big Guy Big World trip to South Korea was filled with unforgettable moments, but two experiences stood out above the rest: The Garden of Morning Calm Lighting Festival and the Seoul Lantern Festival. These dazzling celebrations transformed our journey into something truly magical.

The Garden of Morning Calm Lighting Festival
Located in Gapyeong, just outside of Seoul, the Garden of Morning Calm is one of the most beautiful and serene botanical gardens in South Korea. Spanning over 300,000 square meters, this garden is a year-round attraction, but during the winter months, it transforms into a twinkling wonderland for the Lighting Festival.
We first visited during the day, admiring the peaceful landscapes, traditional Korean architecture, and carefully curated plant life. But nothing could have prepared us for the enchanting transformation at night. As the sun set, the garden came alive with over 30,000 shimmering lights, casting a magical glow over the trees, bridges, and pathways.

Walking through the illuminated tunnels, glowing trees, and sparkling sculptures felt like stepping into a fairytale. The reflections of colorful lights on the snow-covered ground made the scene even more surreal. The Garden of Morning Calm Lighting Festival is truly a must-see for anyone visiting South Korea in winter—whether you’re a photographer, a nature lover, or simply someone who appreciates breathtaking beauty.

Seoul Lantern Festival – A Journey Through History and Culture
Another unforgettable highlight of our South Korea adventure was experiencing the Seoul Lantern Festival. Held annually along the Cheonggyecheon Stream, this festival showcases hand-crafted lanterns that tell stories of Korean history, folklore, and mythology.
As we strolled along the stream, we were captivated by intricate designs, bold colors, and glowing depictions of legendary Korean figures. Some lanterns represented traditional Korean villages, while others showcased mythical creatures, symbols of peace, and cultural icons.

The festival is more than just a visual spectacle—it’s an opportunity to connect with South Korea’s rich heritage. Each lantern tells a story, and as we admired them, we felt immersed in the country’s past and present. The peaceful sound of flowing water combined with the warm glow of lanterns made for a mesmerizing experience that was both captivating and profoundly meaningful.
Why These Festivals Should Be on Your Travel List
The Garden of Morning Calm Lighting Festival is perfect for those who love dazzling light displays and serene landscapes. Both festivals added an extra layer of wonder and magic to our South Korea adventure.
Have you experienced these festivals? Which one would you love to visit?
