Sugar Mill Restaurant Review

Montego Bay, Jamaica

Hello Travelers! I recently had the pleasure of dining at the Sugar Mill Restaurant while in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Keep reading for everything you need to know about this fine dining experience – from the food and ambience, to Big Guy accessibility.

The Sugar Mill Restaurant is an award-winning fine dining restaurant located at Half Moon Resort on the former Rose Hall Sugar Plantation. This resort offers the best in in local and international cuisines, with two other fine dining restaurants and several other dining options in addition to The Sugar Mill.

Arriving At Sugar Mill

Upon arrival, it is a short 2-minute walk from the parking and drop-off area to the lobby of the Sugar Mill Restaurant. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the beautiful Jamaican landscape as you stroll to the top.

How We Dined

As we were guided to our table, we noticed that the restaurant decor has a wide variety of colors, textures, and materials that give a very upbeat and sophisticated Jamaican style. Once we were seated, the staff greeted us and informed us that our taste around Jamaica was about to begin.

For appetizers, we ordered the Jamaica Festive which consisted of Crispy Pork Belly, Ackee Flan and a Plantain Dumpling. The Pork Belly melts in your mouth, and the flavor of the dumpling was savory and complex. We also ordered the Scallops and Tuna. This dish was the perfect mix of freshness and flavor. The fresh tuna and scallops paired perfectly with the mint, pickled coconut jelly, fennel and caviar. These two dishes were the perfect way to kick off our meal.

The chef also brought us each a complimentary petite sweet shrimp wonton in chili sauce! It was the perfect little bite in between courses.

For our entrees, we ordered the Solomon’s Brochette and the Beef Ribeye. The Solomon’s Brochette was quite the experience, and one that I will never forget. It was presented at the table, flamed with aged rum, and absolutely delicious! Talk about a show stopper. This beef, pork, sausage, fish and lobster skewer is exactly what I thought a Jamaican dish would taste like. The mix of the aged rum, Jamaican spices and the different protein selections made for quite the plate. The 12 oz Ribeye was cooked perfectly and paired very well with Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes. A simple classic executed with island flair.

Dessert? Yes, please! The toasted Coconut Pumpkin Pie and Dragon Stout Cheesecake were the perfect way to end our meal. I’m still thinking about that Coconut Pumpkin Pie, can I take two to go or do they deliver to the USA?

The Ambiance

We loved that we were seated out on the patio, facing the lush Jamaican bushes and trees. Hearing the crickets and frogs where the once former sugar plantation stood created a beautiful crescendo of sounds and set the stage for the perfect place to be surrounded by amazing food and great company.

Let’s Talk Seating Options

To help bring a consistent approach to rating the seating at this restaurants, I will be rating each of the following seating options on a 5 star scale, where 5 stars is the highest rating possible.

There were three different seating options at this restaurant. We wish that we would have known this before we dined because, It would have made all the difference. After a while the chairs we sat in did become uncomfortable. The patio chairs had a great height to them but did seem a bit narrower and were snug on our hips. I would give this chair ⭐️⭐️

They did have these types of chairs inside the main dining area. I sat in each of them after we ate and immediately knew these were both the better option, I would hands down give each of them a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

So if you dine at the Sugar Mill Restaurant and if you have bigger hips, ask to be seated in a section with either of these types of seating, it will make all of the difference.

Even though we were uncomfortable at times during our dining experience, the fact that the Sugar Mill Restaurant has different seating options is such a big win for those with various body types. I rarely see this at fine dining establishments and this is something that I will definitely be looking for in restaurants I dine at next.

To the staff at Sugar Mill Restaurant, thank you for making our dining experience one that we will remember forever and we can’t wait to come back for my next piece of Pumpkin Pie.

Something to note, there is a dress code. Before you go, you can review that here

Until next time travelers, be safe, live a full life, be kind and help others. Can’t wait to Catch you on our next adventure.

Hey Mark, I know it’s been a while since you were at Sugar Mill, but were the prices decent for fining dining? $30-$60 per entree? We’re looking to reserve during an upcoming trip to Jamaica. Thanks.
