Suriname was unlike any other place I’ve visited, and its unique charm left a lasting impression on me. Despite having just 30 hours on the ground, we packed our short stay with one of the most thrilling experiences imaginable—Anaconda hunting. Along the way, I met some incredible people and embarked on an adventure I won’t soon forget.

A Diverse Crew for a Unique Mission
Our anaconda-hunting adventure began with a surprising twist. Instead of local guides, we were joined by two experts from unexpected backgrounds—a Scottish man and an Egyptian man. Neither of them were from Suriname, but their knowledge of the region and its wildlife was impressive. They brought a unique perspective to the journey, blending expertise with enthusiasm.
Their passion for the Surinamese wilderness was contagious. They shared fascinating facts about the area’s ecosystems and the elusive anacondas we were seeking. Their diverse backgrounds made the experience even more memorable, adding an international flavor to an already thrilling mission. Despite not being locals, they guided us with confidence and excitement, setting the stage for an adventure unlike any other.

The Journey Through Suriname’s Rice Fields
The hunt itself was no small task. We were hauled onto trucks and spent hours driving through vast rice fields. The terrain stretched endlessly, a mix of muddy pathways and glistening water, while our guides walked alongside, scanning for any signs of movement.
The anticipation built as the hours passed. Hunting Anacondas isn’t like spotting animals at a zoo—it requires patience, persistence, and a sharp eye. Though we were exhausted from the long journey, the excitement of the search kept our spirits high.
The Thrill of the Hunt
For most of the trip, we came across snakes here and there, but none were the elusive anaconda we had been hoping to find. The anticipation grew with every passing hour, and just when we thought we might leave empty-handed, the moment finally arrived. Toward the end of our expedition, we spotted not one, but two baby anacondas.
Holding those baby anacondas was an unforgettable and surreal experience. Though they weren’t the massive, intimidating snakes we had envisioned, they were still remarkable creatures. Their sleek, muscular bodies and piercing eyes were a testament to the untamed beauty of Suriname’s wilderness. These young anacondas embodied the raw, wild spirit of the jungle, leaving us in awe of the natural world. It was a perfect reminder that even small discoveries can make a big impact.

Why Suriname Stands Out
Beyond the adventure, what made Suriname special was its unique atmosphere and the people I met along the way. The blend of cultures, the untamed landscapes, and the warmth of the people combined to create a destination unlike any other. Whether it was the Scottish and Egyptian guides leading us on this wild hunt or the stunning rice fields that set the scene, Suriname offered a one-of-a-kind experience.
Tips for Visiting Suriname and Anaconda Hunting
- Plan for Time: Hunting Anacondas requires patience. Set aside enough time to truly enjoy the experience.
- Go with Guides: Knowledgeable guides are essential—they know the terrain and can make the experience safer and more rewarding.
- Prepare for the Elements: Wear comfortable clothing and bring essentials like bug spray and water. The rice fields can be hot and muddy!
- Keep an Open Mind: The journey itself is as exciting as the destination. Even if you don’t spot a massive snake, the adventure is worth it.
